Keynote Title: “Language Teacher Education: Emotional Dimensions of Teacher Identity”

Abstract: A myriad of parameters may affect teachers’ professional practice and identity formation. Teacher identity development may be formed or reformed by a large number of norms and values. Macro-structural and micro -structural elements encompassing sociopolitical, cultural as well as emotional dimensions can shape or reshape teachers’ manner and praxis of teacher identity formation. There are three domains of learning which include cognitive (thinking), affective (emotions or feeling) and psychomotor (physical or kinesthetic). In this talk, I discuss the affective dimension of teacher identity development. The three perspectives which I will elucidate are (1) Ericksonian Identity Theory; (2) the Socio-cultural approach on identity formation based on Vygotsky’s socio-cultural approach and (3) a Post-structural view of identity by Foucault. Emotional dimensions of wellness pinpoint healthy manners of processing feelings, expressing feelings and self-care. Emotional wellness includes eight dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial. In addition, the four dimensions of emotions encompass: Valence (pleasant- unpleasant); Arousal (passive-active); Control/Dominance (in-control, without-control); Predictiveness (broadly/vaguely predictable; narrowly/ tightly predictable). This talk demonstrates the significance of teachers’ emotions in the construction of teacher identity by elaborating on the status of emotion in identity formation. Teacher identity is manifested in power structures, ideology, feelings, and culture. The construction of teacher identity is affective, and it is contingent upon power, interpersonal communications, and agency. Teachers’ emotions can become causes of resistance, empathy, autonomy, self-regulation, and self-transformation. Analyzing teacher identity through a discovery of emotions leads to a transformative pedagogy which assigns teachers’ agency, effectiveness and empowerment. It fosters teachers’ diverse dimensions of emotional styles such as resilience, outlook, social intuition, self-awareness, sensitivity to context, and attention.
